A family history | 120 years Hotel Central
What is the history of Hotel Central in ’s-Hertogenbosch?
Hotel Central began as a medieval townhouse and military guard post on the city’s main square. In 1905, it became a family-run hotel under the leadership of Johannes Paulus Rademaker. Since then, four generations have expanded and modernised the hotel—despite war, fire, and economic challenges—into the iconic Golden Tulip Hotel Central of today.
A second home in the heart of Den Bosch
Golden Tulip Hotel Central, located on the historic Markt of ’s-Hertogenbosch, has long felt like a second home for many guests. Its warm welcome, personal service, and generous Burgundian hospitality have made it a beloved place for both travellers and locals. Yet behind this familiar façade lies more than 800 years of history—stories of craftsmanship, resilience, and deep-rooted family legacy.
Medieval roots along the Binnendieze
Once, the Binnendieze river flowed past wooden houses and trading posts inside the first city walls of ’s-Hertogenbosch. It was here, in the 15th century, that two stone buildings rose: De Croon van Vranckrijck and De Leeuwenborgh. These buildings—where the hotel now stands—housed inns, wine cellars, a pharmacy, and even a hospital for English soldiers.
From military guard post to post office
In 1639, the building on the right became property of the Council of State and was repurposed as the Hoofdwacht, the city’s main military guard post. Officers were stationed here, soldiers stood watch, and drummers marched across the square. Later, in 1871, it became a post office—until a new chapter began in 1896, when Jos van Eugen opened Hotel Central.
The first generation: the beginning of a family legacy (1905)
In 1905, Johannes Paulus Rademaker, son of a hotelier from Tilburg, took over the business. He laid the foundations for the family enterprise as we know it today—combining craftsmanship with ambition, and turning Hotel Central into a respected name in the city.
The second generation: growth and adversity (1936–1960)
In 1936, Johannes’s son Jan Rademaker joined the business, ushering in a period of expansion and modernisation. The hotel grew, and the first major renovation took place. But Jan’s path was far from easy. In 1943, the hotel was confiscated by the Germans, and not long after, a devastating fire caused extensive damage. After the war, Jan began a determined effort to rebuild. With limited resources but unwavering resolve, he restored the hotel piece by piece. His perseverance laid the groundwork for the prosperous decades that followed.
The third generation: internationalisation and innovation
In 1962, Tony Rademaker, Jan’s son, and his wife Miep took over the reins. They joined the international Golden Tulip chain and spearheaded major expansions during the 1970s and 1980s—adding a new wing, more guest rooms, and state-of-the-art conference facilities. Under their guidance, Central evolved into a full-fledged four-star hotel with international appeal.
A significant renovation followed in 1987. The original main building was completely rebuilt—carefully preserving its historical soul. The Gothic cellar dating back to 1409 was also restored and brought back into use—today known as De Hoofdwacht, a unique and atmospheric events venue.
The fourth and fifth generations: female leadership, vision, and innovation
After the passing of her parents, Karin Rademaker stepped into the lead role. She continued the tradition of renewal, with a focus on sustainability, modern technology, and heritage preservation. In 2022, her nephew Tom joined the management team, marking the beginning of the fifth generation. Together, they uphold the family tradition of hospitality and innovation.
Centuries-old walls, a contemporary soul
Hotel Central is more than just a place to stay. It is a living monument, where the history of ’s-Hertogenbosch is woven into the very fabric of the building—from its cellars to its façades, and in the warmth of its welcome. A hotel where stories converge, and where every guest becomes part of a long and proud tradition.
